Protecting Your Outdoor Furniture

Outdoor furniture can be a great addition to any home, giving you the opportunity to enjoy your outdoor space as much as possible. Whether you have invested in a full dining set for all those al fresco meals that you enjoy in the summer, or instead just have a day bed to lounge upon on the weekend, keeping these items in top condition is very important.

Whether you buy the items offline or online, outdoor furniture can be a big investment of money. This is especially true if you decide to spend your money on higher quality items, as you will no doubt be paying for the benefits of having well constructed and long lasting materials and designs.

Despite the quality of the outdoor furniture you have bought, however, there are several things that you can do to ensure its longevity and get as much use out of it as possible. Here are a few tips to help you achieve this.

The first thing to do when looking to protect your furniture is consider your particular geographical location and the weather conditions that your items will likely be subjected to on a regular basis. Both sun and rain can cause problems over time, wearing down both natural and synthetic materials and leaving your furniture brittle and damaged.

The sun can also cause damage, but unfortunately no sun sealant exists on the market! One way to protect from sun damage is to paint your wooden furniture, as this will provide a barrier between the sun and the wood. The downside of this, of course, is that you will lose the natural wood look of your items. There are many attractive looks that you can achieve with paint, however.

There is another solution to protecting your furniture however that does not involve painting it. Wood stains are widely available both offline and online, and outdoor furniture is afforded a significant amount of both water and sun protection if you choose a high quality brand and reapply it regularly, around every two years.

To protect your outdoor furniture, you should also take steps to protect the fabric that covers it, including your cushions, sofa covers, outdoor carpets and any other fabric in your outdoor space. Saying this, there are many high quality retailers on the maker now selling tough, soft and extremely durable polyester covers which will stand up to water and sun damage for a long time.

There are still many things you can do to prolong the life of these fabrics, however, including applying a fabric protector that is especially designed to adding water proofing protection and fade resistant qualities. If you are unsure whether this will work with your particular fabric, check with the manufacturer what they recommended to ensure the longevity of your products.

Finally, the best way to ensure that your outdoor furniture is protected is by storing it correctly, especially when the weather is bad. If items stay outside all year round, despite the fact you use them infrequently, they are likely to experience a great deal more damage and therefore last for a shorter period of time.

With many tips for storing items available via guides online, your outdoor furniture has no reason not be protected through taking adequate precautions. Invest in treating your items with care and they will be sure to provide you with hours upon hours of use and last you for many long years to come.

Although people often label it as cheap and of lesser quality, MDF cabinets are smooth and durable. The high grade, composite material may not be as strong and sturdy as real wood, but it does stand better against changes in heat and humidity. Moreover, for painted cabinet doors, MDF is a better choice than real wood where wood grain and knots bleeding through the paint are common problems.

Do Not Opt for Extras

There are a number of manufacturers who add in lots of extras into the kitchen cabinets to increase the price. For example, turntables in the cabinets look extremely attractive and handy. However, instead of opting for a built-in version, purchase inexpensive and simple turntables from the local home improvement stores and place it in the cabinets. Not only are they cost-effective, but also work equally well.

Other extras on which you can save money include the cabinet hardware which is considerably expensive when purchased through the cabinet manufacturer.

If you are not inclined to using used cabinets in your kitchen, then wait for discounts on cabinets. Most of the big-box stores, like Home Depot and Lowe’s offer discounts on kitchen cabinets.

Installing the Cabinets Yourself

What to Look Out For

Opting for cheap cabinets does not mean you need to compromise on quality. When buying cabinets, there are some things that you need to watch out for.

➡ Check for cabinets that are certified by the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association.
➡ Watch out for irregular finishes and damage.
➡ It is good to know about cabinet construction techniques, material, finishes, and the qualities of well-designed cabinetry before buying.
➡ Some people like mixing cheaper kitchen cabinet options in areas not as visible with high-grade kitchen cabinets in visible areas to balance their budget smartly.

With a little bit of research and lot of bargain hunting, you are sure to find the kitchen cabinets that suit your budget and make your kitchen look great.

Material for Your Oriental Rug

When buying an oriental rug, there are a lot of things to take into consideration. What size should the rug be? What pattern do you want? Should you buy a rug made with natural dyes or synthetic dyes? Another thing to consider is the material the rug is made of. There are three main materials used to make oriental rugs, and each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Wool

Wool is the most widely used material. It’s soft and easy to work with; however, not all wool is suitable for rug making. To truly determine the quality of the wool, it must be followed through the entire process, from clipping to completion. Unless that can be done, the only way to determine quality is from the feel of the wool and the reputation of the weaving group.

Wool is shorn, then washed and teased into longer, straighter fibers (a process called “carding”). The fibers are then spun together, either by machine or hand, into a thread that is twisted together with other threads to make yarn. Hand spun wool is very irregular. Some points of the twist are looser than other places. Because of this, rugs made with hand spun wool are irregular in color and texture which some people enjoy the look of. Other people prefer a more uniform look, in which case, a rug made with machine spun wool is a better option.

Cotton

Cotton is usually grown in most rug making countries, so it is in very high supply. It’s strong and doesn’t lose its shape. It can also be spun into very small strands which allows for intricate weaving patterns. However, cotton is susceptible to mildew. If you purchase an oriental rug made of cotton, it does require more maintenance than others, especially if you live in a damp or humid environment.

Silk

Silk is produced by the larva of the silkworm, which is native to China. Silkworms have been successfully cultivated in other rug making countries as well. Silk is used either on its own or with wool to make rugs.
There are a number of limitations to silk rugs. They are less supple than wool rugs and lack the “springiness” of wool, which means they retain creases and scuffing. Because of this, pure silk rugs are generally hung on the wall and viewed as art, not used as a functional floor covering.

While wool tends to be the most popular material when it comes to oriental rugs, there are still many rugs made from other materials to be found. When choosing a rug, the most important thing is that the rug is functioning how you want it to (either as a usable floor cover, or as a decorative wall hanging) and that it enhances the aesthetic of the room. Because an oriental rug is such an expensive investment, you want to be sure you’ll be happy with your purchase for years to come.

Tips for Packing Dishes

Relocating can seem to be a daunting task, and you have to take utmost care when you pack and ship all your household items. Even the slightest amount of negligence can result in a destruction of delicate ware. There are a lot of moving companies who will pack and ship all your goods for a fees. These are professionals and are well-versed and know how to take good care when packing. But if you do not hire their services, then you are left with no one but yourself to do every bit of packing. In such cases, it is best if you know how exactly you should pack your things, so they do not get ruined during shipping. When it comes to all the glassware and the dishes in your kitchen, exercise extra caution as these objects are the most prone to chipping.

Tips for Packing Dishes

Packing dishes might be time-consuming, but it is not all that difficult once you get the hang of it. Before you begin packing, here is a list of items you will require:

Cardboard boxes, cell boxes or dish packs
Styrofoam pellets
Lots of packing paper or newsprint paper
Packaging tape
Scissors
Permanent marker

How to Pack Correctly

You need the right kind of packing box to put all your dishes in. Any large cardboard box will work fine, as long as it is strong and can withstand pressure. Make sure that the boxes are not worn out in any way and the flaps open and shut properly. You can ask your local supermarket if they have spare boxes. Also make sure they are durable and free of any bugs and pests.

Take a few sheets of packing paper or newsprint paper and crumple them. Now place the crumpled paper at the bottom of the box. Do not line the bottom with sheets of paper. The crumpled paper acts as a better shock absorber than a sheet of paper. It’s better to use newsprint paper than newspaper. The ink from a newspaper can sometimes rub off and stain your items.
To pack a dish, place the dish in the middle of the packing sheet. Grasp a few sheets of the paper and cover the dish with it. Now place another dish above the first one, and again wrap it with a few sheets of paper. Always use more than one sheet to cover one plate, it ensures better protection. Once you have a stack of 3 or 4 dishes, take the packaging tape and secure the wrapped dishes well. In a similar fashion, wrap and make stacks of all the dishes that you have. Plates of all sizes (dinner plates, saucers, etc.) can be packed this way.
To pack cups, place the cup in the center of the packing sheet and grasp all corners of the sheet, wrapping the cup in it. Crumple the paper as much as you can inside the cup for better protection.
For all your glasses, place each glass, sideways, towards the corner of the packing sheet and roll it till the other end of the sheet. The remaining sheet on both sides of the glass can be rolled up. Tuck in the paper into the globe of the glass. Vases and empty glass bottles can also be packed the same way. If you have expensive wine glasses or crystal vases, you may want to invest in corrugated paper rolls for added protection. You can also buy dish packs or cell boxes available at stores that sell packing supplies to keep all your glassware and china cups.
All cookware, especially if its made of glass or is breakable, can be wrapped using several sheets of packing paper. Do not economize on paper when you pack. Use loads of it. Silverware, including forks, spoons, and knives can be wrapped, several together, and placed inside a bigger cooking vessel for space management.
If you own casserole dishes, wrap the dish in paper first. Then place the lid upside down on the casserole dish and again wrap both together. Remember to place the wrapped casserole sideways in the box.
Disassemble small kitchen appliances (blender, juicer, etc.). Separate the blades and other parts and wrap them securely with paper. If the appliance is made of glass, stuff the insides with crumpled paper before proceeding to wrap and pack it.
Put all heavy, unbreakable items in the bottom of the box. Place the wrapped plates in the box such that they are standing on edge. This way they are less susceptible to damage. Always place cups, glasses, and mugs towards the top of the box. They can break easily if any heavy item is placed above them. Wherever there is space, wad it with paper liberally. Or use Styrofoam pellets.
Once everything is inside the box, stuff loads of paper over the top, like you did at the bottom, and close the flaps, securing them tight with packaging tape. Do not stuff a box with too many items, or it may break. Pack such that there is enough space in between your dishes to stuff them with wads of paper.
With a marker, mark all sides of the box with FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP with an arrow indicating the direction. If you have several boxes, you can label them indicating what they contain, so it’s easier for you when you unpack.

If you plan ahead of time, packing dishes can be done without a lot of hassles. Following the steps above will ensure a trouble-free packing experience. You can easily pack the smaller household items yourself, and hire the service of movers and packers for the heavier and bigger items you may have.

Stainless Steel Fences

Stainless steel is a form of metal that is rust resistant and used for numerous products, especially outdoor ones. It carries great strength and stability to support just about anything and since it is rust resistant, it will not rust through the surface and weaken the stability of the fence. This is especially true for poles like the ones used in metal outdoor fencing and balustrades. Stainless steel fencing has the ability to look good for years and offers plenty of options to the consumer in relation to creativity.

Stainless Fences Are Customizable

Just like any type of metal fencing, stainless steel fences are capable of being painted. The only difference is that stainless will not allow rust to develop and expand. This prevents bleed through over the paint because of its rust-resistant properties.

Stainless steel fencing opens the door to custom colour options that can match your home, the landscape, a barn, your porch, and many other products. You can also be creative and use more than one colour.

Imagine painting every 5 balustrades one colour and the next five a different one. Or maybe imagine painting the top and bottom rails one colour and the balustrades another colour. In fact, you can even alternate colours on the balustrades or make them a two-colour design in which half of each one is one colour and the other half is another.

Bendable Properties

Since stainless steel is a form of metal, it can be bent and curved to make fashionable designs. This works great for patios, hills, stairs, and more. It can be bent to conform to the land or bent to enhance appeal. Many balustrades come preformed and ready to install, but the option to bend them manually is available when desired or when a unique look is wanted. Balustrades can have arched, bent, curved, and/or angled properties.

Enjoy a curved balustrade design with one or more curves. Go for the zig-zag look or choose a twisted design. The possibilities are endless when it comes to bendable properties that make a fence really stand out. Arches on the top rails are also common because it adds value and appeal.

Common Locations for Stainless Steel Fencing

Because stainless fencing is pretty universal and is also open to a variety of options, they are used for just about any need. Stairways and walkways are very common because the railing can be painted any colour and won’t rust. Patios also have a place for stainless fencing. They usually include artistic or designer fencing to effectively mesh with the area and blend with its tone. Aside from that, they are also common in local regions that allow it as pool fencing. But if the locality does not permit it as a pool fence, they are still used as accents to the area or get installed along a path that leads to the pool area.

Red, orange, and yellow are exciting colors which will make the room look bright and pleasant. A good combination of these colors will surely enhance the beauty of your bedroom. Opt for light shades of these colors, as dark or jazzy shades may look too overwhelming. However, you can choose a darker shade for the theme or feature wall, and go for softer hues on the remaining walls. These colors give a soothing and cool effect to the bedroom. A calm and cozy bedroom helps get a good sleep at night. If the bedroom is small, then choosing neutral colors is a smart way of making it look bigger.

Take a look at the size of your bedroom and decide if you want to make it look bigger, and also if you want to implement any special theme or keep it simple. The color of the bedroom walls should also complement the color of the furniture. Try to understand more about different color combinations. You can also look at different photographs of bedrooms with different wall colors.
Kids’ bedrooms are a great idea to experiment with different colors. If it’s a boy’s bedroom, you can use bright colors and implement some youthful color scheme; while for a girl’s bedroom, you can use pink or lavender shades for the walls.
There are a number of interior painting and texture techniques available, like sponging, ragging, and many more. Experiment on a part of the wall with these painting techniques before implementing them. If you are unable to visualize how the colors will look on the walls, experiment with a virtual interior painting. To get an idea of how the color will look, try coloring a small area of the wall, and let it dry.

Bedroom wall colors should be chosen in such a way that they reflect your mood and personal interests. Decorate the interior of the bedroom such that it will blend well with the color scheme of the walls.

Cut Your Moving Costs

Cut Your Moving CostsIf your lease has expired or you are moving to a new home, you might have thought about hiring professional moving services. This is a good option, but availing these services can sometimes turn out to be expensive. The best option would be carry out the entire task of relocation as a DIY project. That would definitely be cheaper, but more time-consuming and tiring. Hence, hiring a moving service provider or company is a smarter albeit pricier option. However, employing certain ways to pack and hire can cut down on your moving costs significantly. If you intend to hire a moving company or service, it is imperative that you hire a reliable one.

It is highly recommended that you check AMSA’s list of certified ‘ProMovers’. You can also check reviews of the service provider on various websites, and visit their social media pages to gain more knowledge. Apart from this, you can compare price quotes of various companies or professionals to get a fair idea about costs and services. After having done the hard part, here is the easy part in the form of a few guidelines that will tell you how to cut costs when moving.

De-clutter
There are many things which we hoard in our houses when we could do away with them any day. For example, if your son has out grown his crib, you might as well sell it or donate it. There is no point in packing and moving things that will hardly be of any use to you.

Compare the Options
Don’t just hire the first moving company you see on the internet. Compare costs and benefits of various moving companies. As an extension to what I mentioned above about finding the right moving professional, you can even consider recommendations from friends and family about moving companies. The point to emphasize here, is to choose a reliable company or professional who will help you move your stuff at an affordable price.

Dismantle and Reassemble on Your Own
Many times furniture items like shelves, beds, sofa, etc., need to be dismantled before moving. Also, if you have heavier gym equipment, you will have to disassemble it. Instead of asking your moving company to do it, disassemble and re-assemble it yourself and save money.

Pack on Your Own
You can further curtail packing expenses by undertaking the entire packing and moving task as a DIY. Unless the stuff is fragile, like an LCD screen or a crystal lampshade which requires special packing, pack on your own. This will help save a significant amount on packing costs. Keep all the things packed, ready, labeled and coded for the moving day. You can avail help of companies like PODS and 1-800-PACKRAT which will send a storage unit at your doorstep for loading all your stuff.

Move During the Off-season
Most people plan to move during summer (mid-June through mid-September) after their children begin their summer break. However, summer is peak season and the moving rates are sky-high. Plan your move during the winter when the rates are low. Also, try to move during the middle of the month as the beginning and end of the month have higher rates.

Rent Reusable Boxes
Instead of spending a large amount on environmentally hazardous cardboard boxes, rent reusable ones. You will be surprised to know how much are able to save by using these boxes.

Moving Discounts and Coupons
Keep an eye on advertisements in the local newspapers, direct mail, magazines, etc., for discount coupons and offers. Many moving companies offer such discounts, especially during the off-season.

Rent/Share a Truck
If you don’t have a lot of stuff to move, you can share the moving truck with another person. This way, you will also collectively bear the cost of the truck. However, beware that there can be a mix-up of boxes, and this can lead to further expenses, not to mention the hassle of returning and picking up stuff. If you plan to carry out all the moving on your own, then you can rent a truck, and ask for help from friends and family to load and unload your stuff. However, it is essential that you know about the mileage and fuel charges before you rent a truck to avoid last-minute surprises.

Get Insurance
You must insist on getting a moving insurance. Remember that your goods can get lost, stolen, or damaged during the journey. Hence, if you are covered, you can avail compensation for lost or damaged property. Check if your items are covered under the homeowner’s or renter’s policy.

Inform Any Change
Any last-minute change to move certain goods should be immediately informed to the moving company. If you dropped the old bicycles from your list of moving, let your moving company know about it. Make a list of all the items to be moved so that an accurate estimate can be made. This will reduce the cost. Confirm with the relocation company about the total cost of moving and packaging, overhauling up the stairs, lifting heavy stuff, etc. The last thing you would want is to be charged for stuff that you were unaware about.

Pack Light for Long-distance Moves
If you are planning to move to a long-distance location, the moving company will weigh all your items to determine the moving cost. This is exactly why you should get rid of the heavy treadmill which you no longer use.

Avail Tax Deductions
If you have decided to relocate for a new job, you can deduct expenses incurred during moving, like storage, transportation, and packing, from your annual tax returns.

As mentioned above, moving or relocating can be expensive, whether it is within the state or across the country. But you can surely cut down on your expenses by a little planning, preparation, and information. What’s more, the money that you save on moving costs can be used to decorate your new home.

The characteristic traits of this type of door are the deep, clean cuts, and vertical beads that create a striped or paneled effect. Arranging in the Living Room

The living room is the primary area of the house, which is why it is essential to arrange its furniture in the best possible way. Firstly, you need a proper conversation area. Creating a “U” or say, a “C” shaped sitting area is the best idea. Many go for an “L” shaped area, which is much inconvenient. For this, you can have a “C” shaped sofa to fill up a spacious area; complement it with a set of same-colored throw pillows and rugs. You can also go for an “L” shaped sofa and get a set of 2 – 3 chairs that can be placed together.

The accent piece or the focal point of the room could be the entertainment center, a fireplace mantel, or the bay window. So, place the sofas and other seating units facing this focal point. The next important point is to keep the entrance free; do not place any furniture piece right at the entrance. Placing the largest piece first and then, playing with the rest of them is an easier way of deciding the layout. You could also place the entertainment center first, and then arrange the rest of the pieces. For the living room, coordinating the colors of curtains or blinds, rugs, carpet runners, pillows, and the rest of the furnishing with each other and with the wall paint colors, as well is important.

Arranging in the Bedroom

Well, this is the most favorite area of the person whom it belongs to. It’s like “my space” for this person, so first decide what all “you” need to have here. You need to decide how you wish to arrange the bed, wardrobe, dressing table, and the bedside tables. According to the aforementioned rule, firstly decide the placement of the bed. You can place this facing the large window, instead of placing it against it, as many do. While you rest, you will have a beautiful view from this window. You can either place this, touching the wall, and add a stylish headboard, or place it in the center of the room. This is a classic idea to opt for, in case of a large bedroom.

Next, place nightstands besides the bed to balance the look. You can place the wardrobe behind the bed in case it’s in the center. While placing the dressing table, make sure that enough area is free in front of it. Also, make sure that the furniture is arranged in such a way that there is enough space for at least two people to dress up comfortably. You can also add cabinets, floating wall shelves, a table and chair, if space permits. One of the modern bedroom plans is to complement the furniture units with a lot of elegant and textured pillows and ultimate bedding, along with rugs, curtains, valences and have a grand looking area.

Furniture layout is an important part of interior decorating. Make sure that you get in good quality pieces and that in decent colors to match the rest of the home decor. Adding lovely accessories to the different sections of the house will give the finishing touch to it in entirety.
